Open World Program - Delegations on the topic of Nursing & Healthcare Management

On May 3rd, two other delegations from Romania began their journey through the Open World Program. The topic of the delegations was Medical Assistance & Healthcare Management and they traveled to Washington, D.C. for national meetings, before heading to Jacksonville, FL and Akron, OH for 8 days.

During the meetings in Washington, DC, Open World Romania delegates met with Maura Shelden, Deputy Executive Director of the Congressional Office for International Leadership and Matthew Tucker, Senior Program Manager COIL. They also attended a leadership session held by Prof. Sam Potolicchio, University of Georgetown, as well as a session on American Federalism held by Matt Glassman at the University of Georgetown. Along with them was Prof. Dan Davidson, Harvard University, the founding president of the American Councils for International Education who spoke about American Culture.

In Jacksonville, FL the week began with official meetings at the Mayo Clinic. The delegates had the opportunity to debate topics such as orientation and competence, accreditation overview, leadership in care, models of care provision, quality measurement, as well as to observe a learning center. In the second part of the day, delegates met with the Chief Nursing Officer at Baptist Health and discussed the health system and the differences between the U.S. and Romania.

The week continued for the delegates with meetings in hospitals and simulation centers, as well as in universities. In Jacksonville, FL they visited a simulation and learning center at Jacksonville University Keigwin School of Nursing, as well as the University of Florida Health Jacksonville. They observed the simulation lab at the University of North Florida Brooks College of Health Simulation Center and had a free conversation with the Director of Nursing.

Delegates also participated in a visit to the Florida Department of Health Duval County where they met with the Director of Nursing and discussed the health department, public health care programs, and career opportunities in the medical system. They continued with a tour of Wolfson Children's Hospital, where delegates saw the Neonatal Magnetic Resonance Imaging. They also participated in a tour of the Baptist Health wards.

On the final day, the delegation from Jacksonville, FL had a meeting with Adjunct Prof. Elizabeth Magnano of the University of North Florida and Congressman John Rutherford's District Office. The day ended with a cultural event where the delegates cooked traditional Romanian dishes.

In Akron, OH delegates began with official meetings at Cleveland Public Hospital, MetroHealth where they took part in the week dedicated to nurses, also discussed improving the quality of the perioperative clinical experience and about models of care in correctional medicine to improve mental health.

They continued with a visit to the University of Akron School of Nursing where they discussed with several professors about the university's programs and quality criteria for nursing programs. They also had a meeting at the MetroHealth Hospital where they discussed how the hospital works, the role of the nurses, the care plan.     

Even more so, they paid a visit to Cleveland State University, College of Health where they had the opportunity to have a discussion with the members of the university and see the simulation laboratory.

Delegates went to Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) where they visited the laboratories and had a discussion with university members on topics such as planning the need for human resources in health at the state level, innovative teaching techniques, dynamics between doctors and nurses. Then followed a tour of the Kent State University campus, as well as the simulation laboratory "Olga A. Mural". At the end of the day they went to Akron Children's Hospital where they visited the hematology and pediatric wards and were invited to attend the hospital board meeting and discuss the quality management system and information systems used in the care plan.

On the last day they visited the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, in Akron, where they discussed the techniques and equipment used in physical therapy and recovery. They also presented information about Romania to the host community.
